There are several reasons that will influence the choice of horizontal band saw instead of sliding table saw. They are various cutting materials, cutting flexibility, cutting depth and thickness adaptability, and some kind of safety.
Various cutting materials:
Horizontal band saw can cut different kinds of materials such as wood, metal, plastic, etc. For example, in a small woodworking plant, if there are both needs for wood and metal, horizontal band saw can meet the requirements. While the sliding table is cutting the thin board, if there are other material such as metal or plastic, the sliding table can not change the special saw blade, or may have not well effect.
Cutting flexibility
Horizontal band saw is more flexible and have huge advantages no matter it is cutting curved shape or irregularity line materials. For example, when making artificial wood engraving products, there is the need for cutting all kinds of shaped profile parts, it is easy for horizontal bandsaw. But the sliding table is more difficult to cut the curved line shapes.
Cutting depth and thickness adaptability
Horizontal band saw is more adaptable for cutting more depth and thickness wood. Although this may take many times cutting for huge height wood. But the sliding table has its maximum depth, which is limit. It cannot cut so thick material. For the big diameter round logs is the best example.
Safety
When cutting some small size or irregularity wood materials, horizontal band saw is safer than sliding table. Because the saw blade of horizontal band saw is rounded and covered with protecting equipment.
The operator will not easily touch the saw blades. While the sliding table is cutting small materials, the material is not easy fixed tightly, which will be easily ricochet by the huge shaking of high speed running sliding table saw blades. What’s more, operator will easily mistouch the saw blade, thus increase the safety risk.
